"At the heart of this translucent resin lies a capsule. This fascinating object represents a link between the human body and materials. Exchanges between cells in the capsule and cells in the body can take place because the capsule allows both to retain their identity. Administered to a diabetic, for example, it could be stocked with insulin-producing cells."

On the Forefront

Patrick Aebischer's strategy for EPFL is to open up academic frontiers: to stimulate interactions between teaching and research, to develop transdisciplinary programs, and to reinforce interactions with industry and society. To reach institutional objectives at the highest possible level, this strategy calls upon the EPFL's rich source of knowledge, experience and expertise in every discipline. From the arrival of Patrick Aebischer in 2000, the face of EPFL has changed profoundly. From twelve departments, five large open schools were formed, including the new school of life sciences. Researchers benefit from project support and interdisciplinary centers. Collaborations with partner universities and hospitals encourage and facilitate the creation of shared technological platforms and scientific centers. These partnerships have also enriched EPFL's educational palette; now all students have an unlimited choice of courses in the social sciences and humanities. Finally, the strengthening of EPFL's commitment to innovation and technology transfer is a critical strategic axis of institutional development, continuing a tradition that includes more than 100 enterprises based on the EPFL campus.
